Today I take you through a Christmas Journey as we delve deeper into the theme of ‘Shared Stories’. We’ll explore specific cultural traditions, their significance, and the lessons they offer for intercultural understanding.
‘Tis the season to unwrap not just presents but the rich tapestry of global holiday stories! As an Intercultural Coach, I’m passionate about the power of narratives in fostering understanding and connection. Last year in Holidays in the Americas, I gave a short description of how the Intercultural Hofstede dimensions mark the different holiday approaches. I covered celebrations in Mexico, U.S. and other countries within the Americas.
This year let’s embark on a journey through the unique traditions that paint the world in festive hues. Beyond the festivities, I’m inviting you as Global Leaders to reflect on the profound lessons these stories impart. From Posadas’ sense of community to Hanukkah’s endurance and Europe’s emphasis on light, each narrative holds a universal message of unity, hope, and understanding.
Posadas in Mexico
Embrace the heartwarming Posadas, a Mexican tradition weaving together community, faith, and celebration. Explore the symbolic journey of Mary and Joseph as they seek shelter in Bethlehem, uniting people in shared hospitality. This symbolic pilgrimage holds profound significance, not merely as a reenactment but as a heartfelt reminder of the couple’s resilience. What’s more, they touch upon the universal themes of hope, perseverance, and the generosity of the human spirit.
Furthermore, as participants join the procession, knocking on doors and seeking entrance, the ritual goes beyond a simple reenactment. It becomes a shared experience, a symbolic act of welcoming others into our lives and embracing the stranger as a friend. The act of providing shelter echoes the essence of Posadas—extending kindness, fostering unity, and creating a sense of belonging within the community.
Second most important element of the posada is the Piñata. Envision the vibrant piñatas swaying overhead, the aroma of traditional foods wafting through the air, and the glow of lanterns and illuminating the night.
How do you or your team members celebrate the posadas and the Christmas festivities?

Hanukkah’s Radiance
Illuminate your understanding of Hanukkah, where the lights of the menorah symbolize hope and miracles. Discover the resilience of a cultural narrative that transcends time, celebrating freedom and faith.
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-night celebration. Each night, an additional candle is kindled in the Menorah, adding brilliance to the darkness. The menorah’s warm glow, a powerful metaphor, signifies the enduring hope that even in the darkest of times, light prevails.
The essence of Hanukkah lies in commemorating the miracle that unfolded in ancient times—a small jar of oil intended for one day miraculously illuminated the Temple for eight days. This event, intertwined with the Maccabean revolt, echoes the triumph of freedom over oppression and faith over despair. For this reason, Hanukkah is a testament to the resilience of cultural narratives.
So, can you or anyone in your team give an example of this tradition and the universal theme it imparts—hope, resilience, and the enduring light that can guide us through even the darkest of times?
